Restaurant Review: The Spur at Eka Hotel

When you drive into Eka hotel along Mombasa Road, the first thing that strikes you is the number of staff waiting to usher you in, all smiles. I was having a rather harassed day, but by the time I got to The Spur their steak house, I was all smiles.

I always check out a restaurant’s wash rooms, and Eka’s public washrooms are excellent, though small.

This was the second time I was eating at The Spur, and there are several things I love about it:
1. Smiley service: The waiter serving us was all smiles and she seemed to know the menu very well, and she paid us sufficient attention throughout, making suggestions on what drinks to have, suggesting desserts etc. frankly, I rarely eat dessert at restaurants, but this lady convinced me to! This was the case the first time I went there, despite the fact that it was a busy Sunday afternoon.
2. A decent vegetarian offering: Most Nairobi restaurants have one vegetarian offering, a lonely, over priced, poorly prepared vegetable curry. Eka has a vegetarian option for almost every item in the menu, and I chose to go with the enchilada which came with delicious guacamole (I love my Avocadoes)

3. The view of Mombasa road isn’t too shabby, and you could sit there all day.

4. The ladies rooms have dry warm towels. Something I have seen nowhere in Nairobi.

What didn’t I like?

I found them inflexible especially when it comes to baby food (something I see in Nairobi a lot). The first time I went to The Spur my baby was about 10 months old, and I requested them to make me some salt-free mashed potatoes for her. They told me they don’t do that, I’d have to give the baby what they had, which had salt. That was a bummer.

That notwithstanding, The Spur at Eka does right in many ways that Nairobi restaurants don’t. I recommend it.
