Just Do It!

Two or so years ago, I had the privilege of free life coaching for a period of six months. I learnt a lot of things about setting goals, achieving them and general life direction, but the one thing that had the most impact can be summarised as this:

My last post spurred a lot of good engagement on how we can bring about change in the education sector but also reminded me of one thing we usually are good at. Talking and planning, especially where giving back to society is concerned. It’s my belief that if you’re blessed enough to be able to read this post, you have an obligation to give back MATERIALLY.

Just to share, I remember telling my coach that ultimately I’d want to have a leadership school for girls, borrowing from Oprah’s Leadership Academy (hopefully with less scandals). Below are two questions that he asked that got me moving a month after my final coaching session:

Q. What do you want to achieve by this?

A. To build a self perpetuating system of passionate women that will change the world. Why women? Though the men will debate this, I’m a firm believer in the ‘Girl Effect‘.

Q. When do you want to do this?

A. When I meet my personal financial goals and can afford it.

My coach then proceeded to declare that if that’s the plan, I will never do it. He challenged me to think of what I can do today. I don’t need to be a millionaire to meet and mentor a few girls every weekend, or even pay one girl’s school fees. He challenged me to start building that army immediately.

Often we wait for the perfect circumstances to do something, and chances are, the stars will never align perfectly, and so we end up living an aimless, impact-less lives, or at best we impact our families which in my opinion doesn’t amount to much.

My challenge to you my reader is to start making a difference in someone’s life today. It doesn’t take much. If your passion is building businesses, there’s a lady I know whose business runs on Kshs 1,000 capital, and she needed to raise another Kshs 1,000 to expand it. There’s a school where a meal for a starving child costs just Kshs 20. Better still, work on a plan to make these school self sustaining. Don’t just make a donation to a random M Pesa number, interact and experience what it really takes for these people and I promise your life will never be the same.

If you would like to volunteer to make a difference especially in education from the less fortunate, you can get in touch with the following:

Have you ever participated in giving back to society, and how did this impact your life? What are you hoping to do once you ‘make it’? Start today.
